The city of \u014cmura, with a population of 94,000, located in Nagasaki Prefecture, is about two hours southwest of Tokyo by air and 23 miles north of Nagasaki City. \u00a0\u00a0With Nagasaki Airport located within the city\u2019s boundary, \"Castle<\/a>\u014cmura serves as a bed town community for Nagasaki and Sasebo Cities.\u00a0 \u014cmura, a castle town with a 1,000-year old history, is known for its influence from early European cultures, beautiful city landscapes, and a variety of colorful flowers.\u00a0 Omura prides itself as a city of flowers, history, and technology.\u00a0 As such, domestic and international tourism is notable.<\/p>\n

In 1582, Japan\u2019s first Christian samurai lord, Sumitada \u014cmura, sent a Christian envoy, including four boys, to Rome to learn Europe\u2019s advanced technology and culture.\u00a0 At that time, the majority of \u014cmura townsmen were Christians.<\/p>\n

\u014cmura\u2019s natural landscapes, comprised of perennial green Tara Mountains, scenic blue Lake Nodake, water gushing Kuroki Gorge, and serene \u014cmura Bay, \"Omura-zakura\"<\/a>are enjoyed by many campers.\u00a0 Cherry blossoms and irises in the spring, cosmos in the fall, and strawberry picking in the winter attract many tourists.\u00a0 \u014cmura Park, one of Japan\u2019s top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots, is a sanctuary for the nationally protected cherry blossom trees called \u201c\u014cmura-zakura.\u201d<\/p>\n
